Squiggle, line, ink splodge…
I am beginning to learn to read hieratic after 3 years of hieroglyphs (both Middle and Late Egyptian) and I cannot believe how hard it is to start! After hours of looking at it, side by side with the facsimile of the hieroglyph version, I am only just identifying the different shapes and starting to see how it all works together.
I am thinking that the best way to attack learning this is to look at texts this way and also learn the shapes of the consonants and then working up from there – has anyone done this? Does anyone have any tips or tricks to upskilling in hieratic?
